Benedetti was a member of the 'Generation of 45', a Uruguayan intellectual and literary movement and also wrote in the famous weekly Uruguayan newspaper Marcha from until it was forcibly closed by the military government in , and was its literary director from From to he lived in exile, and returned to Uruguay in March following the restoration of democracy.
Search review text. I read this book one poem at a time each night to my boyfriend who gave me the book. It was a good way to practice reading poetry in Spanish and also a good way to connect with him since we are so far away from each other right now.
The poems included ones that talk about everyday occurrences that we might take for granted and should cherish more, and other common things that we put too much emphasis on and that take away from other things we should pay attention to. Then there are the poems that talk about political movements and the people involved in them.
At the very end he talks about specific people he looked up to and who were dear to him. I found it hard to read the last two types of poems because I lacked knowledge of the context that surrounded them. Overall this was a good introduction to Benedetti's writing as well as a good way to start reading poetry in Spanish. Benedetti is one poet which without loosing the profoundness, beauty and lyricism of poetry, can make it so easy and so identifiable to every day life.
This little gem of a book, which I found at the Battery just the other day, is just that. A compilation of poems of every day life "Cotidiana" in Spanish means "daily" , the beauty of each poem is its simplicity, yet complex in its real meaning.
