Another major gameplay addition is the animals and the plants. You can capture and eat wild animals as well as plants in order to restore stamina. Also, the jungle can be used in order to traverse and stay hidden by climbing trees.
An injury treatment system was also added. There are many cases in which Snake can get injured for different reasons, like poison or a broken leg or even by taking a bullet. The system asks you to treat these injuries yourself, and if left untreated there will be consequences. It is a turn-based collectible card RPG and its story is considered non-canon.
Set in , a plane carrying an important politician is hijacked by terrorists. They demand from the US Government to reveal a study that was being conducted in Africa. The US sends in Solid Snake to infiltrate the research facility and learn everything about the project and rescue the politician that is captivated.
While the game was not close to the previous ones, as the gameplay was extremely different. Received mostly positive reviews, and also spawned a mobile version called Metal Gear Acid Mobile. The sequel to the first game, Acid 2 , is set some years after the events of its predecessor and features no major gameplay changes, except for the Solid Eye. When in Solid Eye mode the PSP divides the screen into two different images and when you look through the Solid Eye the images overlap and produce a 3D effect.
Another difference to the first game is the use of cel-shaded graphics , replacing the dark graphics. Again, the game produced favorable reception. The story is canon and set 6 years after the events of Snake Eater. The story revolves around Naked Snake, who has to fight his former unit after they revolt. The greatest addition of the game is the Comrade System. This mechanic allows the player to recruit enemies and turn them to allies who can then be sent on missions.
Also, the game features a multiplayer portion, Metal Gear Online, which can affect the single-player portion and vice versa. Portable Ops Plus is a standalone expansion of the previous game which now features many -mainly multiplayer- additions.
A boss rush mode was added when the game detects a save file from the original game. For those that want to follow the story, the original Portable Ops is recommended. The mobile version of MGS was released way back in when smartphones were not providing the convenience of a touch screen yet, so the game used the numbers pad as its controller. That being said, there were discussions over its canonicity in the Metal Gear main storyline. While it could be canon, there are no mentions of its events on any other game , hence the Non-Canon label.
We might have some reserves for this one though. Metal Gear Solid 4 is the next main entry to the series and the epilogue as well, so basically it is the closing of the main storyline. Set in , it follows Solid Snake , infected with a degenerative decease that has greatly accelerated his aging and now goes about as Old Snake flexing an amazing mustache! Gameplay-wise there were stealth elements added , like the OctoCamo suit , which mimics the appearance of any surface Snake lays upon, hence making it difficult for enemies to spot you.
During specific moments in cutscenes, players will be prompted to interact and give out flashbacks which were nostalgic for those that followed the story from the beginning. It featured up to player matches , a noticeable variety of modes and satisfying character customization. The player moves through various stages and eliminates enemies in order to progress. Every so often bosses based on MGS4 will also have their part in the game. A very trivial release. One of the most critically acclaimed games of the PSP, Peace Walker features the recruiting mechanics seen in Portable Ops, only this time they use the Fulton Recovery System , which can be attached to subdued enemies and they are auto-collected.
Also the player can manage the Mother Base , where he can assign recruited soldiers to various teams, depending on where they are best suited. Recruited soldiers can also be sent on missions called Outer Ops. Social Ops was released for Android and iOS devices in It featured many characters from previous games.
Gameplay wise it was similar to Metal Gear Acid. Revengeance is the second game to feature Raiden as the main protagonist and featured more action-oriented gameplay, with much less emphasis on stealth.
The story is set in , four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4. It follows Raiden, now a complete Cyborg Ninja , as he uncovers a plot to turn children in cyborg soldiers. The combat was smooth yet fast-paced and the Zandatsu mechanic was completely badass! The story was really satisfying, yet a bit short. Another plus was the boss fights , each with different mechanics. The developers want a sequel. Apparently, the feud between Konami and Kojima was the reason why the developer team had to postpone their plans , at least for now.
The game has mostly positive reviews, although its short duration is to be considered. Metal Gear Solid took the franchise from a top-down platforming perspective to a fully realized 3D world. It captured the spirit of major action movie blockbusters and wed it to smart, easily accessible gameplay, and a strong, unforgettable story. Since then, MGS games have been enjoying steady popularity up until , when they went on hiatus. But out of all the games, which ones would gamers have said was the best?
Updated on July 9th, by Kevin Pantoja: While the history of Metal Gear Solid games goes back far, the reviews for it on Metacritic cover the more recent additions, starring with the PlayStation 1 classic from Since then, the franchise has released some true gems and a few entries that were met with more of a disappointing response.
It was the rare handheld game that felt like it could've worked on a bigger system. This wasn't as well-received though that was likely due to it not being a full game. It was more of an expansion than a sequel and it put the focus on online play.
While that was welcome, it did make it difficult for the game to match up to what the franchise had done to that point with Metal Gear Solid games. To this point in the franchise, all that had been released were legitimate stealth action games. That changed with 's Metal Gear Acid as this was a tactical role-playing game instead. In fact, it actually moved the action element totally to the side in this.
Metal Gear Acid used a trading card system and focused on turn-based tactics, making for a unique experience. It still included some of the storytelling aspects the franchise was known for, which was appreciated by longtime fans.
Despite it getting positive reviews, not many expected Metal Gear Acid to spawn a sequel. Once again released for the PlayStation Portable, this was another turn-based card game and it included another story that picked up soon after the first installment. A huge difference this time was the addition of the Solid Eye, a PSP add-on that allowed you to view the game differently with it, adding to a more realistic and unique feeling.
That was part of what helped this version get stronger reviews than the previous one. Ground Zeroes was meant to serve as a bridge leading into the full Phantom Pain game. In many ways, it represents a concept idea or a tech demo for audiences to salivate over. It succeeded but received some flak, specifically related to the short playtime and limited mission directives. There are only so many ways a player can replay the same objective twice, which caused Ground Zeroes to fall by the wayside once The Phantom Pain saw a release.
It's still a worthy introduction to that game for first-time players, particularly due to the level of exposition it gives, but once someone plays through it a few times, there's little reason to come back. Technically, this game doesn't have Metal Gear Solid in the title but it's still one of the most notable releases in the franchise. It gave them a chance to control ninja Raiden.
Instead of centering on stealth, this was more of a traditional action game that featured some outstanding gameplay elements involving a sword and the fast style of Raiden's attacks. Aspects like the soundtrack, boss battles , and more were praised, though some felt the story mode was a bit too short. Metal Gear Solid blew the world up As great as Metal Gear Solid is the controls have not aged well, meaning throwing grenades at this tank is about as easy as shooting a three-pointer from downtown while blindfolded.
Pretty much every game in the series ends with a fight against a Metal Gear of some sort. This dinosaur is infused with robotic technology and is a crossover promotion with Monster Hunter.
And, if one knows that series, then they can guess that this battle is a gauntlet of misery. The End can be hard, sure, but there has never been a sniper battle as intense, in any game, as the encounter with Quiet.
Barely peeking out behind a wall can mark the end for a player if they are not careful. Kojima nailed the feeling of what a duel on this caliber would actually feel like. Just two soldiers, both with immense skills, trying to take the other out from a distance. The palms will sweat—that is a guarantee. Pure and simple, this fight sucks. To be clear, this is the final encounter with Volgin, or the Man on Fire since they never actually call him Volgin.
Anyway, in order to damage him, one needs to douse his fiery presence with water. Again, it is not fun. The idea of him coming back as a fire demon is cool in concept, but it did not make for a compelling boss fight.
And now we have arrived at The Boss. No, the tough part about this encounter is the emotional weight. The Boss just revealed to Snake that this entire mission was for the love of her country.
