What can I find that is little known on this subject? You need to plan your research — how will you get the your desired information?
The top of the issue is the statistics and general knowledge while the heart of the issue is the more insightful information. This visual way of communication or language has evolved through the years and has two basic elements: 1. The Icon: Shows an object or emotion through its likeness.
A smiling happy face is just that — the person is happy. Symbol or Metaphor: Using symbols to express ideas and objects. This is when any backstory should be told. It sets the tone and mood for the film and hints at surprises that lie ahead by raising the right questions in the minds of the audience.
In documentary, the beginning always addresses the issue at hand and introduces the subject to the audience. It also establishes the inciting incident — it is the incident that upsets the balance of the film.
The issues at hand must be kept in strict focus and events must be arranged in such a way to ensure that the film keeps moving along and progressing. The end provides the change, answers the question what must be done?
What can the audience do? Each event should grow in nature or intensity because this helps the documentary progress. The way in which the scriptwriter chooses to tell the story through focused POV is called a Narrative. In other words, POV gives or drives the narrative. Once the POV of a sequence has been decided, then the shots are taken from that POV, the sound is tailored towards it and the information given to the audience is limited by it.
They will speak using the personal pronoun, I. It is a record of their experience. Second person: A less common POV in the documentary. Third Person: This is most common in classical style documentaries. The voice is from an unknown source and is known as omnipresent — all knowing. They see events from all sides and can read the inner worlds of characters.
At times films combine first and third-person POVs and have an overall third person POV while switching to talking heads with the characters during the film.
However, while this gives the characters a voice in the film, their own part in the narrative is only as characters and not as narrators. Some Tips for Putting it Together into a Script Format: Characters — you need characters in a documentary because they help to humanize and pesonalise the film.
Of course all characters must have a role that relates to the subject matter. The better the audience gets to know a character the more they can relate to them and this helps to create empathy.
Conflict: This is a vital aspect to any film. Change: Change is some aspect of reality becoming different in a particular way. In the middle, the character must face conflict and, when he does, things change around him and he changes as well. In the end, something must have changed from the beginning and this change lead to the resolution. The scriptwriter must choose which change to include in the film based on how meaningful the change is. Change can be internal — something within a character changes or external when the world around the character changes.
Thoughts and feelings must be expressed through actions. If a person is a dentist show them working at their craft, an artist painting, a farmer in the fields, etc. This will help draw the audience into the experience. Ensure all of you images pertain to the story being told.

Answering them first for yourself can lead you to a story you feel passionate about and are thus able to see through the long process of documentary filmmaking. Once answered, you begin the arduous task of looking deeper into material that will lead you to the story and ultimately, the script. Research is the most important phase of Pre-production and is the foundation of your script. Often, when we begin looking at a topic, others have come before us.
This means that we need to dig deeper into the subject in order to not only inform but also surprise the audience.
This surprise is key to creating an interesting story. They may also turn into interviewees, on-camera experts who elevate the believability factor. This is the time to organize and plan how the story will be transmitted to your audience.
These are detailed scenes to show how the film may play out. When you have this sequence outline clear in your head, shooting the frame is much easier because you already know what you want. This sequence outline follows the natural narrative spine of storytelling which is broken into acts which culminate in the overall message that you are trying to convey. There may be some tweaking along the way, but the sequence outline is there as a guide.
The first column is optional and is used by some filmmakers as a guide to the arc of the narrative. Video and Audio columns are the standard and they are formatted so that the visuals line up with the audio interview, narration, music, etc.
