Video playback was smooth with no issues. The Music section is similar, it lists the albums and tracks and then off to the right it tells you information about the tracks:. You may of course have to enable sharing on your computers, and you may need IDs and Passwords to access certain things. The CinemaTube plays quite a few video and audio types so enthusiasts should like that.
The inclusion of the Torrent client is nice if you use it. As far as the remote is concerned, I has no problems with it, it works fine across the room and is responsive. To play anything you have to go through at least 4 menus, if not more, to get to the files you want to play. This is the biggest issue with this device - they should work on making this as few steps as possible - perhaps by making shortcuts first-class menu items on the first screen you see when select "Video" on the home screen.
Or by doing it like other media players do where they provide one-click access to all known videos. It keeps asking me to "upgrade" to the latest firmware, yet the version that it wants to upgrade me to is an older version than what I have. If I do "upgrade" it then asks me to upgrade to the version I was previously at, which is the newest now that I had just downgraded. It will do this infinitely if I choose to upgrade every time it asks me too. There is no way to turn off the automatic upgrade checks, which would be nice so that I could just ignore the previous issue.
Overall Review: I'm on the fence about whether I would buy this again if I could rewind time. It does its job. Part of the reason why I may not buy this again is that soon after I purchased this I found out that the Boxee Box is coming out very soon.
This will likely be a superior solution. Online updates are a plus. Cons: The online update will nag you until you do the update, which is something you should do right away anyhow. Overall Review: The UPnP support is tempting but the only good services Netflix, Hulu, etc now have high annual subscription costs that coupled with the kludgy text-only interface make me just want to hook up a PC to the TV and stream that way. Plays everything I've thrown at it. Easy setup with a nice small package. Have it hooked to my older 3 component video TV, configured for P. Pros: This thing does it all It is a fast bootup, over the network firmware updates are a godsend. Remember to keep updating until there are no others left. No issues with MKV. THe UI is very responsive after the latest update. Overall Review: The only thing that would be nice is if it could consume DVD cover information, and pretty up the movie names.
That is a very minor nitpick, as the rest of the things this does is just awesome. I plan on using this when travelling. Backup the movies to an external drive, and hook it up to any TV, and away you go. Pros: This is what I've been looking for for a few years now.
It's VLC in a box. It plays just about everything flawlessly. Setup was a breeze and it connected with my network with very little effort. Cons: I really think that But those are minor things. Overall Review: I'm hoping that they include youtube, flickr, hulu and other web-based media web sites to thier interface. The unit was prone to dying in the middle of playback, as if the power had been lost, and then re-booting. Try as we might, we never found a cause for the problem or a set of circumstances that would replicate the problem consistently. We tried multiple containers, multiple video and audio formats, playing from both LAN and multiple USB devices, multiple different resolutions, etc.
It's just effectively random, and extremely annoying. Also, MKV playback at p fails immediately. I'll post a review for it once we try it out.
