Environmental Science pre-college summer program being offered for either credit or enrichment on the Kean Skylands campus.
Our program begins with an introduction to environmental research where you will help to design research questions about climate change in our forests and perform soil and water quality tests of the surrounding area.
You will learn techniques to measure climate change and record weather patterns in the field. The week concludes with a renewable energy workshop where sustainability is explored through hands-on activities. The week begins with environmental research on biodiversity which includes unique hikes around the campus, a biodiversity assessment, and an introduction to arthropods. You will learn plant identification techniques including learning about some of the medicinal and edible species , help with invasive species management, and explore wildlife and bird ecology of the Skylands.
You will participate in both mammal and bird hikes, learning how to identify animal species through their calls and field markings. Our final week is based around the use of drones and other types of technology in monitoring environmental health. You will learn about drone safety and regulations, including how we use drones to collect data. To supplement this technology, important skills in map-reading and map-making, and measuring elevation and topography are merged with flying techniques culminating in a great drone-flying experience.
